The book comes with a foreword by His-All-Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. The language of the book is English. It is the second book on the relations between Chalcedonian and Non-Chalcedonian Churches by Christine Chaillot published by Volos Academy.
The articles of this book cover a range of topics concerning the relations and exchanges between the four Oriental Orthodox Churches and the Eastern Orthodox Churches of the Byzantine tradition, organised into nine parts: History after Chalcedon; Theology; Relations between Non-Chalcedonians and Chalcedonians in the Middle East in the past; Linguistic exchanges, circulation of manuscripts and translations; Similarities and exchanges in liturgical texts and liturgical life between the Byzantine Chalcedonian and Non-Chalcedonian Churches; Exchanges and relations in monastic life; Similarities and exchanges in spiritual life, as well as Artistic exchanges and influences; And, finally, the present dialogue between the Eastern Orthodox (Chalcedonian) and Oriental Orthodox (Non-Chalcedonian) Churches.
Contemporary scholars are increasingly eager to seek connections between people in neighbouring geographical regions and to explore the interaction of languages and cultures, rather than focusing on confrontations or tracing theological polemics for their own sake. This also reflects a growing awareness that historical inquiry should challenge and question, rather than support and perpetuate polemical master-narratives. Over the centuries some exchanges have taken place, and still occur, such as the mobility of texts and literary exchanges, liturgical transfers, and other interactions. It is in this “without Borders” spirit that this book on the interactions between Byzantium and the Non-Chalcedonians has been prepared, addressed not only to specialists (patristic scholars, Byzantinists, historians of religion, theologians, orientalists, and philologists), but also to students and anyone with an interest in Eastern and Oriental Christianity.
Christine Chaillot is the author and editor of numerous books and articles on the history, life and spirituality of the Oriental Orthodox Churches, the Eastern Orthodox Churches, and also the dialogue between these two families of Churches. Her books have been translated into several languages, including eleven in 2025. She is Swiss (from Geneva) and Orthodox (Patriarchate of Constantinople).
