THE EMERGENCE OF A NEW THEOLOGICAL AGENDA IN ORTHODOXY
AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF THE WAR IN UKRAINE
This lecture examines the religious dimension of the war in Ukraine. The Russian Orthodox Church has emerged as a supporter of the Russian state and a proponent of ‘Russian world’ ideology, which fills the vacuum left by communism, and is a form of civilizational nationalism with a messianic character, marked by a critique of human rights, and alignment with the far-right. Orthodox Christian scholars have denounced the religious ideology behind Putin’s invasion and repudiated the Russian Patriarch’s support for the war in the “Declaration on the Teaching of the ‘Russian World’”. This represents the emergence of a new generation of Orthodox theologians, characterized by a renewed interest in political theology, the rejection of anti-Westernism and a constructive relationship with modernity.
