ORTHODOXY IN IMPERIAL AND POST-IMPERIAL CONTEXT

The international conference “Orthodoxy in imperial and post-imperial context”, held at the University of Tartu (Estonia) on 6 October 2025, brought together theologians, historians, and scholars from all over Europe to explore the complex intersections between Orthodox Christianity and imperial ideologies. It was organised by the University of Tartu in cooperation with Volos Academy for Theological Studies and Orthodox Church of Estonia. The event aimed to foster critical dialogue on how imperial frameworks have shaped Orthodox theology, ecclesiastical identity, and political engagement and how these legacies continue to influence the Orthodox world today.

The international Conference “Orthodoxy in Imperial and Post-Imperial Context” is taking place today, Monday October 6, 2025, in the Senate Hall of the University of Tartu, Estonia. The conference is co-organized by the University of Tartu, the Volos Academy for Theological Studies and the Orthodox Church of Estonia. Volos Academy is represented by its Director, Pantelis Kalaitzidis, who presents the topic “Byzantine political theology and the (in)fidelity to the spirit of Nicaea”.

Volos Academy for Theological Studies participated in the 11th Annual Meeting on Christian Origins organized by the Italian Center for Advanced Studies on Religions (CISSR), held between 25 and 27 September 2025 in Bertinoro, Italy.

Dr. Nikos Kouremenos, Research Associate of Volos Academy, joined a panel on “Discourses and Practices around Jesus in the Early Modern Period” and presented a paper titled “Christological Rhetoric and Orthodox Identity in Early Modern Greek Theological Polemics.”
