On March 4-7, 2019 the 2nd International Conference of the European Academy of Religion was successfully held in Bologna, Italy.
The European Academy of Religion (EuARe) is a research initiative launched under the High Patronage of the European Parliament which offers an exchange platform to academies and scientific societies, associations, research centres and institutions, university labs, clusters and departments, journals, publishers, the media and scholars in Europe and the surrounding regions.
The program of the conference included lectiones magistrales and round tables, as well as parallel sessions and book presentations.
Key-note speakers included Professors: Sophie Nordmann (Ecoles Practiques Ses Hautes Etudes, Paris), Maureen Junker-Kenny (Trinity College Dublin), Craig Calhoun (Arizona State University, USA), Tim Winter (University of Cambridge, UK).
The Volos Academy for Theological Studies participated by organizing the following three thematic panels:
The first panel, organized in cooperation with the School of Theology and Religious Studies of Exeter University (U.K.) and the University of Santa Clara (U.S.A.), took place on March 5, 2019 on the topic “What is Theology? The Quest for Hermeneutics in Orthodox Theology.” Speakers included Dr. Thomas Cattoi (Professor, Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University, U.S.A.), Dr. Ivana Noble (Professor, Protestant Theological Faculty, Charles University, Czech Republic), Dr. Tim Noble (Charles University), Dr. Viorel Coman (FWO Research Fellow, KU Leuven), Dr. Michael Borowski (Independent Researcher, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). The panel was chaired by Dr. Nikolaos Asproulis (Deputy Director, Volos Academy for Theological Studies, Lecturer, Hellenic Open University), while Dr.Brandon Gallaher (Lecturer, University of Exeter, U.K.) responded to the papers.
The second panel on the topic “Eastern Christianity in the intersection between theology and social anthropology,” was held on March 6, 2019. Participants included Dr. Pantelis Kalaitzidis (Director, Volos Academy for Theological Studies, Visiting Fellow KU Leuven, Member of the Executive Committee of the European Academy of Religion), Dr. Frances Kostarelos (Professor, Governors State University, Chicago, USA), Dr. Efstratios Psaltou (Institute of Educational Policy, Lecturer, Faculty of Theology, University of Athens, Greece), Dr. Vassiliki Yiakoumaki (Assistant Professor, Department of History, Archeology and Social Anthropology, University of Thessaly, Greece). The panel was chaired by Costis Drygianakis (Volos Academy for Theological Studies-Department of Chanting Art and Musicology).
The third panel, organized in cooperation with the Conference of European Churches (CEC), on the topic “Migration and Global Citizenship,” was held on March 6, 2019. Panelists included: Alessia Passareli, (Study Center Confronti, Italy), Giorgos Vlantis, (Director, Conference of Christian Churches in Bavaria-ACK, Academic Associate of the Volos Academy for Theological Studies), Dr. Nikos Vasilopoulos, (Panteion University, Athens, Greece), Giulia Dalmonte, (World Student Christian Federation – Europe). The panel was chaired by Katerina Pekridou (Executive Secretary for Theological Dialogue, Conference of European Churches, CEC, Brussels).

A) “Lay People in Contemporary Orthodox Christianity: Identity, Vocation, Challenges,” Monday March 4, 2019. B) “Advancing Academic Theology within Eastern Christianity: Prospects for Enhanced Academic Quality among Eastern Christian Institutions,” Wednesday March 6, 2019. Panelists included: Dr. Michael Hjälm, (Assistant Professor, Faculty of Theology, University of Stockholm, Dean of the Sankt Ignatios Orthodox Academy, Sweden), Dr. Alexei Bodrov, (Rector, St. Andrews Biblical Theological Institute, Moscow, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Russia/Holland), Dr. Michael Bakker, (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Holland), Dr. Pantelis Kalaitzidis, (Director, Volos Academy for Theological Studies, Visiting Fellow, KU Leuven, Member of the Executive Committee of the European Academy of Religion)
C) “Scripture and Theology 2019: Moving from Scripture to theology,” Friday March 7, 2019. Panelists included: Dr. Tomas Bokedal, (NLA University College/ University of Aberdeen, U.K.), Dr. Michael Borowski, (Independent Scholar, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Dr. Mark Elliott, (St. Andrew’s University, Scotland), Dr. Nikolaos Asproulis, (Deputy Director, Volos Academy for Theological Studies), Dr. Ludger Jansen, (Ruhr Universitat Bochum, Germany).
It is noteworthy that during the Conference a book exhibition was held with the participation of many publishers (such as Brepols, LIT, Springer, Routledge, etc.) as well as the Volos Academy Publications an imprint of the Volos Academy for Theological Studies.
The next 3rd Annual International International Conference of the European Academy of Religion is planned for June 22-25, 2020 in Bologna (Italy).
